Attentively embracing story is
connecting with self-in-relation through intentional
dialogue to create ease. The theory emerged in the
context of the neomodernist and simultaneity paradigms
as the authors shared situations in practice and
research and linked these encounters to the story
literature. Practice implications with a client who
has hypertension and research implications with a
pregnant adolescent are presented.
Smith MJ, Liehr P.
“When people are
allowed to tell their health stories to caring
others who really listen, healing and change
are possible. We see it all the time at the Wellness
Center. ”When a nurse and a patient engage in an
intentional dialogue in
which both are centered on unfolding the
patient’s health story, the patient is put at
ease and can find solace in
the remembering and sharing. The
nurse’s intentional listening plays an
important role in the
process. “When I am truly present as a nurse,
”Liehr explains, “it enables patients to feel
stronger, take positions,
and move on.” Liehr P.
